Project Description

Whatcom Environmental evaluated a 3.25-acre industrial landfill for evidence of a leachate release to shallow groundwater. Six temporary piezometers were installed around the perimeter of the landfill using direct-push drilling technology. The piezometers were sampled multiple times to account for seasonal variations in leachate production. Groundwater analytical data indicated that there was not a leachate release from the landfill.

Whatcom Environmental initiated closure of the landfill under the existing fill and grade permit. The closure involved the construction of a clay cap on the landfill which was performed in difficult weather conditions. Following the construction of the clay cap, a soil layer was added to the landfill cap to allow planting of a vegetative cover. The site is closed and Whatcom Environmental is documenting the post-closure care of the site.
